Why I Don’t Deliver RAW Images and Why You Don’t Actually Want Them

As a photographer, one of the questions I get asked from time to time is, “Can we have the RAW files too?” I understand your desire to have everything from your investment. But before we dive into why I don’t deliver RAW images, let’s explore what they actually are.

What Even Is a RAW File?

In photography, a RAW file is the unprocessed image captured straight from the camera's sensor. It hasn’t been color corrected, light adjusted, cropped, or refined in any way. It’s not a photo you can easily open, post, or print. It’s a data file meant to be developed later using professional editing software. Think of it this way: a RAW file is like a roll of undeveloped film. You wouldn’t hang negatives on your wall or post them on Instagram. Why? Because they’re not done. They’re just the starting point.

The Chef Analogy

Here’s my favorite way to explain it and probably my favorite metaphor as a creative: Imagine walking into a restaurant, ordering a meal, and being handed a bag of raw meat, unwashed veggies, and a spice rack. You’d probably say, “Wait… I didn’t come here to cook. I came here for a meal.” Exactly.

When you hire a photographer, you’re not just hiring someone to push a button and give you files. You’re hiring a creative eye. A storyteller. An artist who knows how to take what was captured and turn it into something meaningful, beautiful, and timeless. RAW images are the ingredients. Edited images, the ones you see in my portfolio, the ones that made you fall in love with my work, those are the finished meal.

What You’re Asking For

Now this part’s not meant to be snarky, just honest. Sometimes, clients ask for RAW images without really knowing what they are. Maybe they heard someone mention it, or maybe it sounds like a way to “get more.” But more doesn’t always mean better, especially when the “more” is unfinished, unrefined, and unusable.

If you’re not a professional photographer or photo editor, chances are you don’t have the software, tools, or color profiles needed to open RAW files, let alone edit them to match the look you originally hired me for.

So the real question becomes: Why do you want them?

  • Do you want more photos than I deliver?

  • Do you want control over the editing?

  • Do you want to make sure nothing was “left out”?

If that’s the case, let’s talk about it. I’m happy to walk you through what’s included, how I choose which images to deliver, and how I edit to reflect the true tone of your day. But giving away RAW files is like giving away a half-written novel and asking someone else to finish it — and sign my name at the end.

Our Delivery Method

At Shots By LC, we use what I like to call an “unlimited” style approach. The number listed in your package is simply an estimate; I deliver every single photo that meets my quality standard.

That means if your best friend is caught mid-sneeze in the background, you’ll still get it. Those are your memories, and sometimes they’re the ones you’ll laugh at for years to come.

What I won’t deliver are:

  • Shots that are unintentionally out of focus

  • Accidental photos of the floor, a wall, or someone’s hand

  • Test frames or images that just don’t make sense in the story of your gallery

I believe in giving you the full story of your day: the beautiful, the funny, and the heartfelt but always in a way that reflects my professional standard and your investment.

EXAMPLES OF UNINTENTIONAL PHOTOS THAT WILL NOT MAKE IT INTO A GALLERY

My Work = My Name

At SHOTS BY LC, every image that leaves my camera and enters your gallery has been reviewed, edited, and delivered with care. It reflects my creative vision, my style, and my standard of excellence.

Delivering RAW files would be like handing someone my brushstrokes without the painting. It’s not the experience I want for you, and it’s not the quality I stand behind.

EXAMPLES OF SOME MEMORIES THAT WILL MAKE IT INTO YOUR GALLERY

In Summary...

I don’t withhold RAW images to be difficult. I withhold them because I care deeply about your final product. You hired me for a reason, not just because I own a camera, but because of the way I see the world through it. Because of the stories I tell. Because of the way I edit light, frame emotion, and create photos that feel like you.

And that story isn’t finished in a RAW file. That story comes to life in the edit. So let me do what I do best and trust that your images are in good hands.

The Heart of Photography

Photography is not just about capturing moments; it's about weaving a narrative. Each click of the shutter is a heartbeat, a whisper of emotion frozen in time. When I photograph your wedding, I’m not merely documenting events. I’m telling a story that reflects your love, your journey, and your unique bond.

The Importance of Editing

Editing is where the magic happens. It’s the process of transforming raw images into polished memories. Each photograph undergoes meticulous attention to detail. I enhance colors, adjust lighting, and ensure every image resonates with the emotions of your day. This is where the heart of your story truly shines.

Trusting the Process

I understand that you want to be involved in every aspect of your wedding. Trusting the process can be challenging. However, I assure you that I am dedicated to capturing your essence. My goal is to create a collection of images that you will cherish forever.

A Personal Connection

Every couple is unique, and so is their story. I strive to build a personal connection with each couple I work with. This connection allows me to capture genuine moments that reflect your true selves. It’s not just about the photos; it’s about the experience we share together.

Final Thoughts

In the end, photography is a collaboration. It’s a dance between the couple and the photographer. I invite you to trust me with your memories. Let me create something beautiful that you can hold onto for a lifetime. Together, we will craft a visual narrative that speaks to your heart.

Let’s embark on this journey together, capturing the essence of your love story. Your memories deserve nothing less than the best.

And remember, the beauty of your wedding day will be captured in a way that reflects your love, your laughter, and your joy. Trust in the process, and let’s create something extraordinary together.
